May 19th meeting

Not so much news this week.

1. Be professional, keep your experiment logs, and always record all data! Don't be slack, this could lead to big problems down the road.
2. For master's students, there are scholarships for conferences available.
3. If you wish to participate in the Stockholm International Youth Science Seminar, the deadline for application is June 21st.
4. New building, we need LAN paperwork to connect to the net!
5. Anna's goodbye party - May 28th - yakiniku! HS is the organizer.
6. Next week, MO is in charge of the meeting (JDR will be on holiday likely).
7. Put things back exactly where you found them in the lab - scissors and vinyl tape are missing.

May 12th meeting

Lots of news this week:

1. Job openings: Active Ranger on Ishigaki and in Naha Mangrove Wetlands.
2. Please shut all lids in the lab tightly!
3. May 19th - new building has internet and phones.
4. 3rd years: two people have been decided on, and will enter the lab. MN and SN.
5. Part time jobs available: a) Sperm Conference - see Takemura-sensei.
b) Toxicology conference - June 16-18th - see Yamasaki-sensei.
6. May 29th - English school kids walk on the beach at Toguchi- who wants to be a volunteer guide?
7. June 25th, Nishihira-sensei will give a special presentation on coral reef biodiversity.

3. A inspector will come to check our lab on July 21st. So, please don't put your samples fixed with ethanol or formaline in the students room.

4. There is a 4th years' mid-term presentation on August 1st. Please give your help to 4th years.

5. Don't leave diving equipments on the balcony or they will get damage by UV.

6. Don't leave shoes in hall.

7. Lab coats are needed when you do experiment in room 533.

5.CA & FS won a prize at the CBE conference for their photo of an octocoral (today's photo) from the deep sea. Congratulations!

6. Karen showed her illustrations of marine organisms including deep-sea creatures in our seminar. It was very interesting. thank you, Karen!

7. One of the 4th year students will give a mid term presentation on July 15th in science building room 528. If you are free, please come and listen!

5. Ms. Sung Ying who is a member of Chen's lab will come to Okinawa on June 29th and atay in our lab for 2 weeks.

3. No boat fishing in this weekend. Fred will organize night-fishing in July.

5. JDR & MO will be absent from University during the next week or two.

6. If anyone is interested in scholarships, check the Inamori Scholarship on the web.

More recently, some coral species in Okinawa have spawned. I hope some of us (especially me) can take a picture or movie of coral spawning!

Holobiont symposium in Taiwan  → June 22th~23
Japan Zoological Science Conference in Shizuoka  → Sep. 17~19th.

4. JR will go to Taiwan for sampling on Sep. 6~12th.

5. JR is planning a lab short trip at Oku on Sep. 26~27th.

6. JR might go sampling to Guam in mid of September....?

7. Be careful not to make things fall off from the balcony of lab room. After you use blue backets, please put weights inside.

4. University is ordering us not to go to the place where there is Influenza. ex.. Fukuoka, Osaka

Lab meeting 2009.2.4

Another quick meeting; it is test and report season.

1. Tanks this week: FS.
2. Beach: JDR and CA are going February 6th, Friday - Sesoko and Churaumi. Let JDR know if you are interested.
3. CA will have a party at her house with Colombian food on the 12th or 13th (note: this will be one week later so people can attend).
4. Big lab clean - fiscal year end, likely sometime in March. Stay tuned.
5. 4th years paper deadline is Feb. 13th (Friday no less) at 5 p.m.
6. Meeting next week will be at 4:30 pm on Thursday, as Wednesday is a holiday.

Meeting 2008.11.26


Busy day!
Present: FS, MO, YM, CA, ES, TF, YH, YS, MH
Absent: YI (Shizuoka), JDR (prof meeting)

Here is the news:

1. CA and FS: copy your gaijin card, passport, and visa, keep them in a safe spot just in case.
2. Microscope and digital camera now ready to use! Thanks to MO and ES.
3. Primers - must be ordered by this Friday (FS, CA, YM, JDR).
4. Diving around Korijima - end of December!
5. FS will go to Hokkaido sometime next spring.
6. 2 more 2nd year students wish to come do research with us; now 5 people!
7. Shopping: lots on the wish list; JDR will order what he can.
8. YS showed us a video of him winning his pro debut fight in about 40 seconds. Don't get him mad!
9. Tanks: YM.
10. Seminar - do NOT forget to prepare a summary (Mon before presentation) and also to inform the chair of your title (Fri before). Send the PDF to the chair as well.
11. YS and YH: make webmail addresses.
12. YS: lab rule sheet please!

We then cleaned up the experiment room; it looks great! Thanks to everyone for their help.

Meeting 2008.10.22


JDR had only two hours' sleep, so apologies for any mistakes in advance.

Today's meeting info:

Absent: MO (Tokyo), YI (Churaumi Aquarium)

Notices:
1. Please pay JDR money for Hedo camping if you have not already! He is a bit poor this week.
2. 3rd year/Master's seminar: will be held on Wednesdays after lab meetings. We explained guidelines and rules today. JDR also handed out schedules and information later Weds. Check your desk or inbox!
3. JCRS 11 poster printing: JDR will make reservations tomorrow. We will print between Nov. 18-20, depending on available times.
4. 3rd years - good luck on your research. Now is the time to get started seriously before spring exams and job hunting!
5. TF is tank water manager this week. Yoroshiku!
6. JDR, FS, YM, TF, and MH went to Manza last week after visiting Churaumi Aquarium. Great dive! Also, we got to see YI doing her on-the-job training class at the aquarium. Nice boots! YM will do some electron microscopy with Nonaka-san.

Trips:
1. JDR off to Townsville, Australia for the3rd Japan-Australia Marine Research meeting. Oct.25-Nov.1
2. FS is thinking of Yonaguni sometime over winter holidays (Dec. 24-Jan.9)
3. FS and TF go to Chiba from Nov. 1st to Nov. 5th to work with Yanagi-san on histology and DNA.

Today's presentation was CA, who showed us pictures of Colombia. The food looked particularly good. Next week; YM.
